Time alone doesn’t heal all wounds. Sometimes, we need support for that.

I’m Jay, and I help people recognize and care for the wounded parts of themselves with gentleness and compassion. My goal is to create a safe space where my clients can approach their own unique stories with curiosity and kindness. I encourage everyone to learn to move forward in a way that works for them.

I work primarily with clients who are navigating what it means to belong in a world that didn’t always feel like it was made for them. I specialize in supporting LGBTQ+ individuals, those recovering from the impacts of religious trauma and purity culture, and neurodivergent adults.

I am trained to provide EMDR therapy in order to support my clients as they heal from their wounds. I love seeing this tool help my clients gain greater confidence and freedom.

Jay Callahan Therapy provides telehealth therapy services to those in Minneapolis, MN and the surrounding region.

You’ve spent your life feeling like you don’t fit in anywhere, and it’s getting harder to believe that place exists.

Have you ever thought to yourself, “I am too much” or “I will never be enough?” These negative beliefs can form early in our lives when we don’t get the care and understanding that we need to feel secure in ourselves. They can also come from feeling that we don’t understand our place in the world.

These types of early wounds can be even more complex if you grew up “different” in an environment that promoted strict rules and rigid beliefs about what was right and wrong. This can often lead to difficulties with communication skills, emotional intimacy, sexual intimacy, and more.

The good news is that it’s not too late to learn to provide compassion and care to yourself in order to experience a deeper sense of belonging in your own life. You might just need some tools and guidance along the way.

  • Individual therapy for adults

Therapy can help you learn to recognize past wounds and give you the tools to care for yourself more effectively moving forward. I center my client’s individual experiences and consider how their unique story plays a role in their care. I have experience with the complex factors that come into play for queer individuals, those who have gone through religious deconstruction, and adults who have been diagnosed as neurodivergent later in life.

  • EMDR Therapy

EMDR Therapy is a well-researched and effective psychotherapy tool. I offer EMDR therapy to help my clients recover from singular traumatic events as well as the more complex negative experiences that come from being forced into a box you never really fit into. This can be especially helpful for LGBTQ+ people, those with religious trauma, neurodivergent adults, and anyone else who spent their life receiving the message that they were the problem.

  • Services for Therapists

Therapists and other caretakers often struggle to find space for themselves, especially LGBTQ+ therapists. As a gay therapist, I understand that we are often drawn to the work because of our own wounds, but then invest so much in others that we end up burnt out and maybe a little crispy. I enjoy creating space for the helpers to be cared for, to reconnect with their own resources and sense of joy, and offer to themselves what they freely give to others.
